||Enum. Dist. 174 (713 Elk St.) Buffalo, Erie Co., New York
About noon yesterday, Mr. Matthew Jordan, an old and much respected resident of Buffalo, died at his house, no. 713 Elk St. For the last twelve years, Mr. Jordan had been a policeman, and for some time past his familiar face was seen at the railroad crossing at Elk Street, in the Seventh Precinct. Mr. Jordan was born at Portlaw County, Waterford, Ireland, on October 11, 1818, and was therefore at the time of his death nearly 65 years old. He came to Buffalo in 1840, having been for some time in America, and worked at various trades. When the late Dean Richmond was president of the New York Central Mr. Jordan was chief shipping clerk in an intimate acquaintance of Mr. Richmond. Mr. Jordan was a well-educated, honest, and genial man. He leaves three daughters and five sons to mourn his loss. His wife died about 3 years ago. He had for some time been suffering from a bronchial infection. He was uncle to Capt. Anthony Collins of the Third Precinct.
The funeral of the late patrolman Matthew Jordan was observed at his late residence, 713 Elk St., yesterday morning. It was largely attended by acquaintances and friends. A line of detailed policeman acted as guard and pallbearers. The funeral cortège moved to St. Patrick's Church, where impressive funeral rites were observed, and an impressive sermon preached by the Rev. Father McDermott. There were elaborate and beautiful floral designs around the casket, tributes from friends. Among these were “Gates Ajar,” an offering from the teachers of grammar school number 4, in which the eldest daughter, Mary E. Jordan, is a much esteemed teacher; a large shield, representing a policeman's badge, with a baton, no. 88, and B. C. P. in purple immortelles, surmounted by a pure white dove from the members of station number 7; a massive upright cross, resting on a bed of roses and smilax, with the word “father” in ageratum blossoms, from his children; 2 other crosses of roses, lilex and smilax were sent by the model social club, to which one of his sons belonged. A large procession followed the remains to Limestone Hill, where they were interred by the side of those of the wife and 2 daughters.
