    • Census: 1900, 690 Michigan St., Buffalo, Erie Co., New York
    • Census: 1905, Buffalo, Erie Co., New York

    Notes:

Called "Mary" in later life, but perhaps "Louisa" earlier.

According to the 1900 census, she had been married for two years before being widowed, had had 2 children, of which only one was living in 1900. This all matches.

This is from the 1900 Census, all living at 690 Michigan Ave. in Buffalo:

    Family 343:
Emil Zaepfel, head, 54, born in Germany, parents born in Germany; year of citizen ship is 1872.
Mary Zaepfel, wife, 45, born in NY, parents born in Germany

    Family 344:
Fries, Victoria, ?head, 51, born in NY, parents born in Germany
    Fries, Victor, son, 21
    Fries, Walter, son, 18
    Fries, Louis, son, 15
    Fries, Joseph, son, 13
    Fries, Oscar, son, 10
    Fries, Blonde?, daughter, 8
    Bizantz, Antony E, nephew, 25
Bizantz, Louisa M, sister, 56, and widow, born in NY, parents born in Germany.

Both Victoria Fries and Louisa Bizantz are widows. Who is Emil Zaepfel? The name comes from the part of Germany (Alsace) that Rame and Rusch come from. Since the Zaepfel family has a different number, I assume that Emil Zaepfel is not related to the Rame sisters of Louisa and Victoria, but was just a boarder or friend from back home.

Since “relation to head of household” goes by family number, Antony Bisantz is Victoria Fries’ nephew, and Louisa Bizantz is Victoria’s sister. This matches. Antony Bizantz is Victora Fries’ nephew--her sister Louisa’s son. This is Anthony E. Bizantz III, who would marry Martha Valiquette in 1902, two years away.

  1. 8.  Anthony Edward Bisantz, Sr. was born in 1804 in Steinsoultz, Haut-Rhin, Alsace, France (son of Pierre Jacques "Peter" Bisantz and Anna Maria Ursula Mislin); died on 3 Dec 1858 in Buffalo, Erie Co., New York; was buried on 5 Dec 1858 in United German and French Cemetery, Cheektowaga, Erie Co., New York.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Census: 1850, Black Rock, Buffalo, Erie Co., New York
    • Probate: 23 Dec 1858

    Notes:

In the 1850 census, he has 7 children listed: “B.,” Maria, Catherine, Eliza, “Mauft,” Augusta, and Daniel. There is also a “Conrad, Mike” living there who was born in Germany.

He is living next door to a “J. Bisantz,” a brother who is 4 years younger, and so cannot be Johann or Joseph.

The stone at the cemetery has 1859 for his death, incorrectly.

Augusta and Daniel are not in Margaret Bowman-Gray’s notes; I got the names from the 1850 Census, at which they were aged 3 and 1, respectively. I assume that they died as children?

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Census: 1850, Black Rock, Buffalo, Erie Co., New York
    • Census: 1860, Buffalo, Erie Co., New York

    Notes:

She appears in the 1869 Buffalo City Directory as “Bisantz, Mary M. wid. h. Genesee n. toll-gate.”

She is in the 1860 census, after her husband died, as the head of the household. With her are living Magdalena (21), Catherine (19), Mary Anna (15), Anthony (13), and Dominicus (11).

This is confusing, as some of these names are not on the 1850 census; I’ve recorded them all.

There are other Krafts buried at the French and German Cemetery; I just don’t know whether they are related or not:

    Kraft, Amelia, A. b: 27 Dec 1846 d: 01 Jul 1895
    Kraft, Blasius d: 12 Dec 1888 Aged 55Yrs 8Mo 24Da

  3. 10.  Anthony Ramé was born on 29 Jan 1808 in Romagny-sous-Rougemont, Territoire de Belfort, France (son of Louis Ramé and Maria Françoise Clerc).

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Emigration date: 1828, Le Havre, Seine-Maritime, France
    • Immigration date: 17 May 1828, New York City, New York

    Notes:

At his birth, his father was 35, and his mother 25.

This seems to be his family arriving arriving on 17 May 1828 in NYC from Le Havre, on the SS Henri IV:  Louis Rhame, age 54, farmer; Françoise, age 44 (parents, presumably, though her name doesn't match Anthony's mother in the marriage record); Antoine, age 19, Louis, age 17; Françoise, age 11; Mary Ann, age 9; and François, age 4.

A note by the transcriber says that "Rhame family may also have ties to Romagny-sous-Rougemont." It's not clear why the transcriber included this note, but a number of other passengers on the ship were from this small area. Romagny-sous-Rougemont is in the Alsace region of France (near the upper Rhine). It is now in the township of Rougemont-le-Château, Territoire de Belfort in Franche-Comté.

According to the the St. Louis Catholic Church Archivist: 1 June 1836 Antonius Ram, son of Ludovicus (Ludwig or Louis) and Maria Francesca Claire, and Victoria Rusch, daughter of Joseph and Maria Gangloff: marriage performed by Fr. Alexander Pax, no witnesses given.

I assume that Françoise was altered to Francesca by the clerk.

The 1867 Buffalo directory lists an “Anthony Rame, Farmer” that might be his son, living at “Bird Road n. Del.” I don't see the name at all, however, in any other city directory going all the way back to 1844.

    Birth:
Family history places his birth in Alsace. Date is from from likely immigration record.

Anthony married Victoria Rusch on 21 Jun 1836 in St. Louis Church, Buffalo, Erie Co., New York. Victoria (daughter of Joseph Rusch, Sr. and Maria Gangloff) was born in 1814 in Alsace, Grand-Est, France; died on 11 Dec 1895 in Buffalo, Erie Co., New York; was buried in United German and French Cemetery, Cheektowaga, Erie Co., New York. 4. 11.  Victoria Rusch was born in 1814 in Alsace, Grand-Est, France (daughter of Joseph Rusch, Sr. and Maria Gangloff); died on 11 Dec 1895 in Buffalo, Erie Co., New York; was buried in United German and French Cemetery, Cheektowaga, Erie Co., New York.

    Notes:

The name is also "Resch" and "Rush" in records. I assume she immigrated. She must have been in the US, and married to Ramé, by the mid-1830s.

According to the the St. Louis Catholic Church Archivist:  21 June 1836 Antonius Ram, son of Ludovicus (Ludwig or Louis) and Maria Francesca Claire and Victoria Rusch, daughter of Joseph and Maria Gangloff marriage performed by Fr. Alexander Pax, no witnesses given.

On the 1850 census, as "Victoria Rohm," she is living with an "M. Rush," male aged 67, born in France. Is this an error for her mother? Or another older relation? I see no "Rush" or "Rusch" in city directories around that year.

Also, no husband is listed as living with her, and she has no profession either. There is no "Rame," or an Anthony with a close last name, in the Buffalo city "commercial advertiser" directories between 1849 and 1859

This following might be her; the age matches, at least. If so, she was married after she arrived:
    Name:   Victoria Riess
    Arrival Date:   Jul 5, 1842
    Age:   28
    Gender:   F
    Port of Arrival:   New York
    Port of Departure:   Havre
    Place of Origin:   France
    Ship:   Condor
    Family Identification:   30093740
    Microfilm Serial Number:   M237
    Microfilm Roll Number:   49

On the 1880 census she is living with “daughter” Luise Bisantz, aged 37; and “son” Anton Bisantz”, aged 5. This must be Mary Louisa and Anthony; her daughter’s husband, Anthony Bisantz Jr., had died in 1875, and so after this they all moved in together. She and her parents were born in Alsace, and her daughter was born in New York, and so with her grandson. The children were born in “New York” State according to the 1900 census.

    • Probate: 4 Dec 1895, Buffalo, Erie Co., New York

    Notes:

His ancestry and his wife's is thoroughly Québécois, French-Canadian.

The 1845 Marriage Record gives his name as “Octave Valiquet,” but this must be him, since his wife’s name is “Martine Terrien.” His marriage record names him as “fils Majeur V. Albert Valiquet et de Suzanne Charbonneau de la paroisse de Saint Jerome.”

His son John’s 1919 passport application names him as James O. Valiquette.

There are three different birth records in the Basilique Notre Dame in Montréal, Québec for a Joseph Octave Valiquet, none of which match his parents. In 1821, Joseph Octave (1) was born to François Valiquet and Veronique Hébert. In 1827, Joseph Octave (2) was born to Pierre Valiquet and Françoise Turiot. In 1828, Joseph Octave (3) was born to, again, François Valiquet and Veronique Hébert, no doubt because (1) had died.

He is “Villket” on the 1870 Census, which is a key to this family: but, he has no first name there. His full name comes from the 1880 census, where he is “Vilquett.” The name is also “Valiquet.” His family before the 1870 census, however, is a real stumper--help would be appreciated!

Family history says that he was born in Canada, presumably Quebec. One son’s census, however (George C., in 1910) says that both his parents were born in Vermont. Their son Moses married a woman from Canada, and their daughter Josephine’s husband was French.

In the 1870 household, he is living with his wife, his daughters Josephine and Emelia, and his younger sons; the older ones must have moved out.

The 1875 New York State census says that he and his wife (as "Villigut") were born in Canada, but that their daughter Amelia was born in Onondaga County, and that the rest of their children were born in Monroe County.

In 1890, James Valiquette, Ship’s Carpenter, is living at 204 West Forest Ave. in Buffalo, according to the 1890 city directory.

There is a Joseph Valiquette buried at the French and German Cemetery: Valiquette, Joseph b: 1847 d: 1912; see here: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=74830196

    • Census: 1880, Buffalo, Erie Co., New York

    Notes:

Her ancestry and her husband's is thoroughly Québécois, French-Canadian.

The marriage record names her as “Martine Terrien. fille Mineure de Toussaint Terrien. forgeron. et de Josephine Guillet de cette paroisse”

Also perhaps called Margaret, as on the 1875 NY State census. Her last name comes from her son Joseph's grave stone, in Toledo.

"Terrian" on her son Moses' death certificate.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Occupation: laborer on 1870; butcher on 1880 census
    • Religion: Catholic
    • Immigration date: 1860
    • Census: 1865, Wheatland Twp., Monroe Co., New York
    • Census: 1870, Scottsville, Wheatland Twp., Monroe Co., New York

    • Census: 1900, Wheatland Twp., Monroe Co., New York
    • Census: 1905, Wheatland Twp., Monroe Co., New York

    Notes:

According to the 1900 census, he immigrated in 1860. More likely he immigrated earlier, however, since the 1865 NYState census says that all of his children, including the oldest, were born in New York state. So, he seems to have immigrated by 1855. He does not seem to appear in the 1860 US census in New York State. This puts him at the start of or just prior to the potato famine years in Ireland.

He appears in Wheatland Twp. in the 1865 NYState census, aged 50. He and his wife Catherine (no maiden named mentioned) were born in Ireland, and James is marked as Naturalized. All of their children are listed as born in Monroe County, including daughter “Ann J.” (Honora), aged 10. Other children in the household are Thomas (8), Bridget (6), Maria (4), James (3) and Peter (1).

He was, it is said, a “builder of bridges during the Civil War.” There was a James Clark who served in the 50th New York Engineers, originally organized at Elmira; this one had a middle initial "C." There was a James C. Clark living in Genesee county in the 1860 census, but married to Augusta Clark, so I don't think this is the same one.

The censuses in 1870 and 1880 again place this family in Wheatland, a bit west of their Post Office in Scottsville, New York, in Monroe County south of Rochester. Pictures of this family show Oatka Creek, on which folks used to go boating, with a paper mill and a blacksmith shop identified next to the creek. Oatka Creek is now a public park near Scottsville. I assume the park was near the house, and available close by for family outings. It was possible for boats to transit from the Genesee Valley Canal to the Creek at one point via a lock.

In 1905, in the NYState census, he was living on Main Street in Wheatland with his son James, a butcher, and daughter Anna, doing housework.
