Obituary Obituary, Buffalo News, 28 Oct. 2011:

Lt. Col. Anthony E. Bisantz, Vietnam War hero, volunteer firefighter

    Dec. 9, 1936—Oct. 13, 2011

Anthony E. Bisantz, a Buffalo native and Vietnam War hero, died Oct. 13, 2011, at his home on Hatteras Island, N. C., after a brief illness. He was 74.

A graduate of Bishop Fallon High School and Canisius College, Mr. Bisantz was the son of the late Eugene A. and Anne Jordan Bisantz of Buffalo. He retired after 23 years in the Army as a lieutenant colonel after having served his country around the world, including two tours of duty in Vietnam during the height of the war.

While serving in Vietnam, Bisantz was awarded the Silver Star for valor. According to an October 1966 citation in the Congressional Record, then-Capt. Bisantz’s company perimeter was attacked by an estimated two Viet Cong battalions. During the attack, Capt. Bisantz exposed himself to hostile fire as he coordinated and directed his unit’s defense, the resupply of ammunition, and supporting fire. While sweeping the area immediately forward of his company the following morning, a platoon from his unit was pinned down by a large Viet Cong force, the Record noted. Capt. Bisantz immediately organized, directed and led a counterattack that drove the Viet Cong from the area. As a result, pressure was relieved on the trapped platoon and his company was able to re-establish its position. And after an errant U. S. aircraft dropped two napalm tanks into the task force command post, Capt. Bisantz quickly contacted the forward air controller to divert a second aircraft and undoubtedly saved numerous lives.

Other military honors he received included the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, Combat Infantryman Badge and Legion of Merit.

After his military retirement, Mr. Bisantz worked as a financial consultant in Moline, Ill., retiring in 1995. He relocated to Rodanthe. N. C., where he served with the Chicamacomico Banks Volunteer Fire Department, volunteered at Our Lady of the Seas Catholic Church and worked as a tax aide in the AARP Foundation Tax Aide program.
